International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are professionals with extensive experience and in-depth knowledge in supporting breastfeeding families, especially with babies with more complex issues. IBCLC is the highest recognised qualification in breastfeeding, it is recognised internationally, and once qualified, IBCLCs are required to prove they have kept up to date every 5 years by submitting evidence of 75 hours of continuing professional development.

Many people within the NHS and private sectors call themselves breastfeeding consultants or specialists but do not have the IBCLC credential. IBCLCs are regulated by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and must follow a strict code of conduct.

We will see babies from newborn up to 16 weeks and 0 days of age. This is due to us specialising in early feeding and tongue-tie issues as IBCLCs and it is inappropriate to give information that is out of our remit.

As Lactation Consultants, we can support your feeding journey whether that is by breast or bottle, or a combination of both. Tongue-tie can affect both bottle and breastfed babies, so in some cases, a tongue-tie division may aid certain feeding issues.

At the appointment, we will take a full medical history of baby, as well as a detailed feeding history. Seeing a feed prior to an oral examination may be helpful to see if any feeding issues may be resolved conservatively. We will offer an oral assessment to determine the function of the tongue. We will talk you through everything we are looking for and what we find. If a tongue-tie division is indicated, we can perform that on the day. We will then assist you with feeding immediately after the procedure. Even if a division is not performed, we can support you with feeding during the appointment.

Depending on the severity of the thrush, if baby has commenced treatment, we will be happy to perform a tongue-tie division if clinically indicated.

We take a full family medical history and if you or a healthcare professional have any concerns with your baby’s health, we can help signpost you to the most appropriate practitioner. This may not always be ourselves.

If you would prefer the procedure to be performed in the hospital, we can support a referral to NHS clinics.

If you are undecided, we would be happy to see you within 2 weeks of the initial appointment for a reduced cost of £50.

We don’t think that babies find it a long-lasting pain as babies will feed following the procedure. Feeding, in and of itself, is a form of pain relief and babies obtain comfort from being close to you. In the next few days following a tongue-tie division, your baby may be a bit fussy as their tongue may feel tired and heavy as they are using it in a different way.

1 in 25 babies may have some form of re-attachment. As the wound heals and comes back together, a new restriction may form. Usually, this is through no fault of your own or the practitioner and it can take up to 2 weeks for this to be apparent.

This will require a new assessment to be performed, and should another division be indicated, this would be for a cost of £50. We would only recommend a total of 2 divisions to be performed.

We encourage you to continue practising the techniques we will have discussed in the appointment, as well as having lots of tummy time and interaction with your baby.

We request that cancellations are made over 24 hours before your appointment time. This is so we can offer your appointment to another family who need our services.

We take a non-refundable deposit of £25 on booking to cover admin fees. This can be done via PayPal or BACS transfer. The remainder of the payment will be taken on the day of the appointment via PayPal, card payment or cash.

On request, we can provide evidence of our qualifications as Midwives, Tongue-Tie Practitioners and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). We can also provide details of our registrations with the NMC, CQC and insurance companies.
